Types Of Air Compressors

Air compressors are mechanical devices that increase the pressure of the air or gas by decreasing its volume. Air compression is a special kind of air compressor. These compressors work on the principle of the reciprocating cam and the principle of the sine wave. This is one of the inventions of the engineers of this century.

There are mainly three different types of compressors Rotary Vane, Centrifugal, and Centrifugal Pulse. Centrifugal Pulse compressors are also known as pulsatile, scroll, or scroll compressors. The main rotor shaft in a rotary vane air compressors moves perpendicular to the flow. The fluid flows through an impeller that is typically made of a ceramic tile or a metal plate with an inlet and outlet ports. In some models, the impeller may be made of cast iron or aluminum. Centrifugal air compressors use pistons driven by a crankshaft to move the piston upward or down. A shaft and a rotor assembly push the piston down or up. Centrifugal Pulse compressors, like most of the other types of compressors, utilize a single-stage or double-stage motor to achieve higher pressure than other models. The air passes through a needle called a discharge valve, which allows controlled discharge pressure. This type of pump is more energy-efficient than the other two types of compressors.

Centrifugal air compressors use a counter-rotating fan that circulates the warmed air through a housing in which the motor is located.

Unlike the scroll and pulsatory compressors, the water/water-cooled components in a Centrifugal air-compressor do not have an oil or water-free compressor chamber. Consequently, pressure drops rapidly in an air compressor with a water-cooled motor. Water acts as a lubricant for the bearings, oil for the fan and gas for the refrigeration cycle. The temperature of the gasses emitted during compressor operation varies according to the cycle size, pressure and humidity. The flow control is a separate function that can be accomplished with a variable-speed electric motor or a scroll or pulse motor.

Another type of air compressor is the Ultrasonic air compressor, which utilizes ultrasonic sound waves to increase airflow. It has an air compressor component and a tank to house a compressed air supply. It operates with a single screw vent at the appropriate pressure point. The main advantage of this type of air compressors for sale is that it operates at very low temperatures, greatly improving gas mileage. However, it is expensive due to its complex venting system.

The final type of air compressors is the gas-fueled units that are self-contained and mounted externally. They utilize a common air filter to remove impurities from the air. Gasoline is commonly used as the fuel; however, a recent trend is the use of alternative fuels, such as natural gas and propane. To improve fuel economy, it is advisable to select the right air compression model that matches the intended application. A wide range of compression models is available from several manufacturers, including those recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
